‘Mixed Emotions Part II’ highlights marginalised Asian Australian voices by increasing their visibility through a photographic body of work. Combining constructed photography and cultural artefacts, the project reveals unique stories anchored to mixed Asian identities, as defined by growing up in Australia.  The background to the work is a suite of one-on-one interviews exploring identity and connection to culture.

This project draws on the lived experiences of second generation Asian Australians growing up mixed-race and investigates the challenges that currently exist within Asian Australian communities. These challenges include the loss of ethnic identity due to societal pressures to assimilate, or a disconnection to culture, family or place, and the mixed-race experience. Incorporating visual cues and cultural artefacts in the work, aims to reclaim and push for new narratives concerning ethnic identities within Australia's cultural landscape.

This project is supported by GENERATE GC, a City of Gold Coast initiative delivered in collaboration with Tasdance and SITUATE Art in Festivals.

The Regional Arts Development Fund is a partnership between the Queensland Government and the City of Gold Coast Council to support local arts and culture in regional Queensland.
